Issue 3

the Art of Joomla - Editorial

Welcome

Written by Andrew Eddie

Welcome to Issue 3 of the Art of Joomla!. With the release of 1.5.2 and 1.5.3 come a few useful fixes that may not be obvious to the naked eye. We will also continue our giving Legacy Mode the boot series, as well as starting a new one on creating a component from scratch natively.

But before we get into our features, I'd just like to make mention of the fact that I had the please of attending the Joomla! Day at Byron Bay, Australia, recently. It could not have been more Australian with the barbie going with onion and snags constantly throughout the afternoon. We had a lot of great presentations but the ones that really touched my heart are where people share their Joomla! story about how it has changed their lives.

A chance football accident turned Richard Allen into a complete quadriplegic in April 2008. But before any surgery had been performed, his friends had pulled together richardallen.com.au to support his family. Joomla! has able to give his wife, with precious little time, an avenue to keep people informed of progress. It's stories like that that make putting your back behind Open Source all worth while.

I also received this email after the event.

"I really do appreciate what you and the core team have done to enable someone like me, a visual artist with no computer or tech experience until the beginning of last year to present my artwork over the net in a cost effective way. In a way my website has change my life."

Thanks Saun. I think this goes to show that Joomla! is much more that a piece of software. There is something really special about people who volunteer to create something that has such an impact of hundreds of thousands of lives around the globe.
